No. It addresses only the confirmed lighting scope. It does not replace a full Section J assessment where building fabric, glazing, sealing, HVAC, heated water, energy monitoring or other energy-efficiency provisions apply.

Which projects may be suitable for a lighting-only assessment?

Some commercial tenancy fit-outs, retail or office fit-outs, selected alterations, industrial projects and separately documented lighting packages may be suitable. Eligibility must be confirmed from the approval scope, certifier requirements and project documentation rather than from the building type alone.

Typical information includes project and approval details, architectural or tenancy plans showing room uses and floor areas, the lighting layout, luminaire quantities and input wattages, and details of switching, occupancy sensors, time controls and other relevant control systems.

No. Section J lighting compliance assesses energy-use limits and applicable controls. It does not by itself demonstrate that the lighting design achieves required lux levels, uniformity, glare control, colour rendering or every functional and visual lighting requirement.

No. Emergency lighting, exit signage, egress requirements and associated electrical certification sit outside the scope of a Section J Express Lighting Assessment.
