What are the changes occurring to the BASIX certificate in 2017?
Regarding changes to the BASIX certificate, the NSW Department of Planning and Environment will implement the following changes to BASIX energy targets in July 2017:
- A 10% increase in energy targets for low-rise units and houses.
- A 5% increase in energy targets to high-rise units.
The changes to the BASIX certificate will overall help to save NSW household owners over half a billion dollars in the next 50 years.
In 2014, the NSW Government consulted its proposal to increase energy targets, with support from over 80% of submissions. The Minister released the news of these changes in October 2016, in the paper titled “A Draft Plan to Save NSW Energy and Money”.The NSW government is also seeking further feedback on the paper in an effort to continue improving BASIX. The NSW Government’s Draft Plan to Save NSW Energy and Money recognises that one of the simplest ways in saving household owners money is through reducing home energy.
The reason for the increase in the energy targets is twofold. Firstly, the increase recognises the significance in continuing to decrease energy usage for homes within NSW. Secondly, this will also mean reduced costs for consumers energy bills.
The changes to the BASIX energy targets will allow cost reductions to NSW households by approximately $2.6 billion by 2050, with the average household benefitting by about $4500 in energy bills over 30 years. Further, households will benefit from the improvements to energy targets during the course of reselling property. It is estimated that in the next 40 years, 1.8 billion homes will be built across NSW. Currently homes are consuming approximately 17 per cent of the state’s total energy.
