Choose VURB when your design uses non‑standard materials, has unusual geometry/orientation, lots of glazing or shading, or you want more performance‑based flexibility. VURB is permissible in all Australian states and territories except New South Wales (for now under Certified Energy’s services).
VURB assessments are particularly beneficial for projects featuring large or complex glazing façades, non-standard window shapes, or innovative architectural designs where prescriptive compliance under DTS would require compromises. They are ideal when using new or alternative systems such as custom shading, advanced glazing types or high thermal mass materials. Large or multi-storey buildings with significant orientation, solar exposure and shading considerations also benefit from the flexibility of VURB. Early involvement in the design phase is important to allow adjustments that optimise performance. In comparison, NatHERS is generally better suited for many residential houses, especially where a star rating is required by legislation or when prescriptive compliance is straightforward. DTS provides a simpler, prescriptive path for standard builds with minimal deviations and less modelling complexity. VURB offers greater flexibility but demands more detailed modelling, thorough documentation and early design collaboration. It is available across all Australian states and territories except NSW for Certified Energy’s services. Additionally, local councils or certifiers may impose extra requirements or expectations for VURB reports.
Using the right compliance method can help save costs, maintain design integrity and minimise delays in your project. Choosing an inappropriate path—such as relying on DTS when your design cannot meet its requirements—may result in costly redesigns or difficulties obtaining approvals. Selecting the correct approach ensures you meet all regulatory obligations, helping you avoid rework, compliance failures and potential penalties.
We assess your project’s specific situation to advise whether VURB, DTS or NatHERS offers the most efficient and cost-effective compliance path. With our understanding of local council and certifier requirements, we can anticipate potential concerns and guide you accordingly. We also simulate different scenarios to show how your design performs under DTS versus VURB, helping you understand the implications for cost, performance and overall compliance.
