What is a Section J Report?

A Section J Report is an energy efficiency assessment for commercial buildings. It ensures your design complies with Part J of the National Construction Code and is required before a construction certificate can be issued.

Short answer

A Section J Report proves that a commercial building meets minimum energy efficiency standards under the National Construction Code.

Full answer

Section J refers to Part J of the NCC Volume One, which sets out energy efficiency requirements for non-residential buildings, including offices, warehouses, schools, hotels and hospitals. The assessment covers elements such as glazing, insulation, HVAC, lighting and hot water.

You can comply through the Deemed-to-Satisfy pathway or the JV3 Verification method. A Section J Report is required at the construction certificate stage for all new commercial projects and major refurbishments.

Why this matters

It ensures new buildings use less energy, meet national standards and gain construction approval. Without a Section J Report, your project cannot legally proceed.

How Certified Energy can help

We assess your design, calculate energy loads, and provide a fast, clear report that meets NCC requirements. We also advise whether JV3 modelling may be more beneficial.
