What Is Section J?

Section J contains energy efficiency provisions for relevant buildings and building work governed by NCC Volume One.

The National Construction Code establishes minimum requirements for the design and construction of buildings throughout Australia. Volume One primarily applies to Class 2 to 9 buildings, while Section J addresses energy efficiency for the building classifications and forms of work to which its provisions apply.

Section J is intended to reduce the energy required for a building to operate while maintaining the conditions and services expected of its intended use. It does this by setting requirements for parts of the building that influence operational energy consumption, including the envelope, glazing, sealing, lighting and relevant building services.

The applicable provisions are not identical for every project. It may be considered where the architecture cannot readily satisfy one or more prescriptive provisions or where performance in one part of the design is intended to compensate for another.

JV3 is a Verification Method that can support a Performance Solution through comparative whole-building energy modelling. It is not simply a more flexible version of a standard Section J report and requires its own assessment scope, modelling process and compliance documentation.

Projects considering this pathway should be reviewed individually to determine whether modelling is justified and whether the available design information is sufficiently developed.

What Information Is Required for a Section J Assessment?
