A Section J Report is a compliance document required under Volume One of the National Construction Code (NCC) for non‑residential and certain mixed‑use buildings (Classes 2‑9). It demonstrates that a building’s design meets the energy efficiency requirements in Section J of the NCC.
Section J of the NCC (also called Part J) sets out energy efficiency standards for commercial and other non‑residential building classes. It covers things like building fabric (roof, walls, floors), glazing, building sealing, lighting, air‑conditioning and ventilation, heated water and monitoring of energy use. A Section J Report analyses your building design against those standards using either the Deemed‑to‑Satisfy (DtS) path or an alternative performance‐based method (such as JV3). The Report is typically required before a construction certificate (or equivalent local permit) is issued to show compliance with the NCC.
A compliant Section J Report is essential for regulatory compliance, as failing to meet the requirements may result in your project being refused a permit or construction certificate. By meeting the NCC Section J standards, you can also achieve significant energy and cost savings through reduced demand for heating, cooling and lighting. Proper compliance improves occupant comfort by enhancing thermal performance and reducing issues like drafts, overheating or cold spots. Additionally, lowering your building’s energy demand contributes to reduced greenhouse gas emissions, supporting broader sustainability and net‑zero objectives.

At Certified Energy, we prepare Section J compliance reports for NCC Classes 2‑9 using both Deemed‑to‑Satisfy (DtS) and JV3 performance pathways. Our team carefully reviews your plans and specifications to identify any areas of non‑compliance and provides practical recommendations to ensure your design aligns with NCC energy efficiency requirements. We deliver clear, accurate reports that meet the expectations of local councils and certifiers, helping you achieve approvals smoothly and without unnecessary delays.
