Short answer
Most renovations do not need a full NatHERS 7 star assessment, but upgrades and extensions may still need to show energy efficiency compliance under the NCC.
Full answer
The 7 star standard applies mainly to new dwellings built under the National Construction Code 2022. Renovations and extensions are assessed differently depending on state, rules and the scale of work. Small alterations such as replacing windows or refurbishing rooms usually do not trigger a natHERS assessment. Larger extensions or second storeys may need to show that the new parts of the home meet current energy efficiency requirements. In NSW, renovations that change the thermal shell of a home may also need a BASIX certificate.
Why this matters
Understanding when 7 star compliance applies helps homeowners and builders avoid unnecessary costs and ensures building approvals proceed smoothly.
