What is a BASIX Certificate?

Short answer

A BASIX Certificate is a mandatory document in New South Wales that proves a residential building design meets sustainability requirements for energy, water and thermal comfort.

Full answer

The Building Sustainability Index (BASIX) Certificate is part of the NSW planning system. It ensures that new homes, renovations and multi-unit developments comply with government targets for reducing water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. A BASIX assessment is lodged online and generates a certificate once the design meets the benchmarks. This certificate must be submitted with your Development Application (DA) or Complying Development Certificate (CDC).

Why this matters

Without a valid BASIX Certificate your project cannot move forward in the approval process. It also provides assurance that the property will be more efficient to run, saving money on utilities and supporting sustainability goals.

How Certified Energy can help

Our accredited assessors prepare and lodge BASIX Certificates quickly and accurately. We work with architects, builders and homeowners to ensure compliance is met while balancing design freedom and cost efficiency.
